Camera Equipment

I get a lot of e-mails from people who after looking at my photos would like to know what sort of camera and lenses I use, so I thought I would write this page giving some details and some of my thoughts about my 'gear'

First of all I shoot completely digital, I never really got into film photography. First digital camera was the Kodak DC215, a compact camera with just over 1 million pixels, then I moved onto a Kodak DC4800, another compact camera but with the ability to change a lot of settings, eg aperture, shutter speed, etc. At 3.3 megapixels if was quite a good little camera and I was able to get some great shots with this one.

Then Digital SLR's were introduced to the mainstream and for the first time they were affordable by amatuer photographers. Prior to the launch of the Canon D60 and the Nikon D100 digital SLR's had been available as had digital backs for professional cameras but they were expensive, very expensive. For an amateur to afford one of these would have probably meant re mortgage on the house, cash in all your investments and pension funds and possibly claiming on your life insurance. But, with the introduction of the D60 and D100 at about the same time the price of these cameras became within reach due to some healthy competition.

I decided on a Canon D60 and was able to get one pretty quickly from a local dealer (without having to re mortgage the house). The Canon D60 was a great camera and it took a long time to learn how to use it but once I had the hang of it I could take some great photos. The D60 was in existance for less than a year before it was replaced with the Canon 10D, a very similar camera but with some improvements not least to the autofocus. At first I was very happy with my D60 and saw no reason to make the slight upgrade to the 10D even though it was a lot less expensive than the D60, but somebody made me an offer for the D60 which I couldn't refuse so I moved onto the 10D and I have been shooting with it since April this year.

Update

The 10D & Canon EOS 1D MKII are now used as a backup cameras as my main body is now the Canon EOS 1D MKIII
