Following the recent announcement that Kumho tyres is to be the sole control tyre supplier in the MSA British Rallycross Championship, Silverstone tyres contracted Super Modified driver Russell Etherington has confirmed his withdrawal from the Championship.
Russell commented: "We have been left with no option but to withdraw, following the BRDA's decision to implement a control into the MSA British Rallycross Championship. The team has a tyre contract in place with Silverstone tyres and we will now focus our intentions on the Open Championship and the British Benelux weekend in July. We are 100% committed to Silverstone tyres and developing its products for Rallycross. I am already impressed by the levels of commitment and enthusiasm that Jerry has shown to the team and his refreshing approach to developing tyres in Rallycross. We think it would be unprofessional to keep switching from different products from event to event and are looking forward to working with Silverstone for many years to come." The British, Belgium and Dutch back to back weekend Rallycross events take place at Maasmechelen and Valkenswaard on July 9th and 16th. Fellow Silverstone tyres contracted driver, Chris Cake has also scrapped any plans for a possible appearance in the Championship later in the year. Jerry Freeman, representing Silverstone tyres added: "It is disappointing that the decision will prevent Russell and Chris from taking part in rounds of the MSA British Rallycross Championship. The top two categories in Rallycross are all about healthy competition and as a result we welcome all of the competitors on different makes tyres to race in the LINGsCARS.com Rallycross Open Championship against Silverstone tyres. This will allow us to develop and learn from the best tyre manufacturers in the sport." Image copyright Ian Hardy www.ianhardy.net
